DC Youth 8-0 Coleraine u14

March 8, 2010

North West & Coleraine Youth League

Draperstown resumed their league campaign on Saturday after a lengthy break due to the poor weather. They recorded an 8-0 victory but this was not Draperstown’s best performance and they know they will have to raise their game and improve their finishing if they want to contend for the league title. The game started well for Draperstown and after 3 minutes they took the lead after a great move involving M.McAuley, Greenwood, T. Flanagan and P.Flanagan who finished well. Coleraine tried to respond straight away and it took a good block from McCabe to prevent a goal scoring chance.

Within minutes of the Coleraine attack O’Hara broke out of defence skipped past three tackles and his shot was just wide. Draperstown were dominant at this stage and a great ball from T.Flanagan was met first time from R.McGuigan but he was ruled offside and the goal disallowed. However the second goal was not long in coming and a good angled shot from T.Flanagan made it 2-0. Two minutes later T.Flanagan could have had another when he showed good skill and strength but his shot hit the post.

Draperstown continued to dominate the game but some wasteful shooting meant the half finished at 2-0. The poor finishing by Draperstown continued after the break and they should have had another 3 goals within 10 minutes of the restart. A break through did come on 15 minutes when long throw from R.McGuigan was collected by P.Flanagan and his chip made it 3-0. Draperstown continued to press and the difference in strength and size in the squads began to tell and O’Hara scored twice in quick succession to make it 5-0.

It seemed that all the Draperstown players were looking for a goal and this resulted in a lack of discipline in the Draperstown team. This allowed Coleraine to have a couple of half chances but they could not capitalise on them. A Draperstown corner caused confusion in the Coleraine penalty area and sub Z. Elalaoui finished smartly to make it 6-0. With 10 minutes left Draperstown were awarded a penalty when Elalaoui was pushed by the Coleraine centre – half. McGuigan stepped up and made it 7-0. There was still time for another Draperstown goal and after good work on the right O.McGuigan found Lagan whose excellent cross was met by P.Flanagan sliding in for his hat-trick.

Cookstown Youth 1-0 DC Youth

February 17, 2010

North West & Coleraine Youth League

Draperstown made the short journey to local rivals Cookstown Youth in the third round of the NIBFA U15 Cup. The hosts have an excellent youth set-up and are experienced in performing in this competition. This is Draperstown Youth’s first year in this cup but you would not have known who the most experienced team were by watching this game. Draperstown matched Cookstown in all areas of the pitch and were unlucky to lose 1-0. Cookstown started the brighter and in the third minute a good through ball put them on the attack but Scullion in the Draperstown goal was well positioned and cleared the danger with a great block tackle just outside his area. Draperstown settled and on 8 minutes a good pass from Doyle was just too long for McGuigan.

Both teams then had a good deal of possession without any real chances. Draperstown won the ball through English whose pass found T. Flanagan who went on a run and beat a couple of players and then played the ball to his brother but the Cookstown defender showed good strength in holding off the forward and shepherding the ball back to his keeper. From his kick-out Cookstown went straight on the attack down the right wing and finished with a shot that went narrowly wide of the far post. Again both teams saw a lot of the ball without any clear cut chances but it was Draperstown who finished the half stronger when another break from Flanagan put Doyle through but the keeper collected well.

After half time Cookstown went straight on the attack and a cross from their left winger skimmed the Draperstown bar. The only goal of the game came on the 5th minute when a goal bound shot was bravely blocked by O’Hara and the rebound fell to another Cookstown forward whose shot was again well defended by the Draperstown defence but it was third shot lucky for the hosts when the ball fell kindly to the forward and he hit the ball into the bottom corner with Scullion’s view blocked by all the bodies. Draperstown then went on the attack and when awarded a free kick from 30 yards out O’Hara stepped up and hit a ferocious shot which the keeper could not hold – unfortunately the Draperstown forwards were not alert to the follow up. Draperstown continued to dominate the game but did not have another chance until the 30th minute when a clever free kick from McGuigan was picked up by O’Hara and his shot went just wide of the post.

All in all Draperstown were unlucky to lose the game but they can be extremely proud of their performance and this bodes well for the rest of the league campaign.

Best on the day for Draperstown were Stephen O’Hara and Mark McAuley

DC Youth 0-0 Dungiven U15’s

February 9, 2010

North West & Coleraine Youth League

Draperstown Youth had not played in 7 weeks since these teams last met on 12th December 2009 and it showed in what was a really scrappy hard fought game. While both sides toiled and gave plenty of effort there was little to be seen in terms of skill from either side, especially in front of goal. The opening 15 minutes were scrappy with neither side in control and both teams giving away possession easily. On 20 minutes Piaras Flanagan beat his marker and accelerated up the side line; however the Dungiven right back covered well and made a great tackle to break up the attack. This was about as good as it got excitement wise in the first half for the spectators.

The second half was a more open affair but as for the first there was a dearth of skill and hence much of the game became a mid-field battle. Dungiven started and a couple of mistimed clearances by O’Hara, who it turned out was carrying an injury, put the Draperstown defence under pressure. However McGuigan in goals cleared the first with a well timed sliding challenge and then McCabe made a great interception for the second. Draperstown upped their game and started to put the Dungiven defence under pressure but all too often the final ball was poor. Dungiven then broke through the defence and it was only a magnificent tackle from O’Hara that prevented Duddy from having a clear shot on goal. Draperstown then attacked with the best move of the match.

Jack English won the ball at left back, carried it out of defence and found P. Flanagan with a great ball – Flanagan played a neat one-two with his brother and his cross come shot was palmed out by the keeper. The loose ball was collected by Doyle who then found T. Flanagan whose shot hit the bar with the keeper beaten. With Dungiven playing largely on the break, their chances were few, but they did have another good chance on 60 minutes when Duddy, who was Dungiven’s only real threat, broke down the right wing and hit a scorching shot which skimmed the top of the cross bar.

The last 5 minutes saw Draperstown encamped in the Dungiven half as they attempted to secure the win but the Dungiven keeper was equal to all the Draperstown players threw at him.

Best on the day for Draperstown were Cahir McCabe, Conor McKenna and Stephen O’Hara

Dungiven U15’s 0-1 DC Youth

December 14, 2009

North West & Coleraine Youth League

Draperstown Youth led the way in Draperstown doing the double over Dungiven teams on Saturday. In a scrappy and hard fought affair a single goal was enough to give the points to Draperstown at Ballygudden. And with Draperstown beating Dungiven in the League Cup semi-final it was a good day for the South Derry team over their North Derry rivals.

Draperstown started the brighter and on 2 minutes a great ball from Hegarty gave a shooting opportunity to McDevitt but his strike was well saved by the Dungiven keeper. Draperstown continued to attack and when McKenna won the ball in midfield he broke through and shot narrowly wide. Draperstown did not have it all their own way and when a mistake from McCabe let the Dungiven centre forward through it was good pressure from O’Hara that forced the shot just wide. From the kick out Dungiven won the ball and attacked again causing the Draperstown defence to concede a free. The shot was tamely hit and easily gathered by Scullion. Dungiven were in control at this stage and when they broke through again it was good covering by M. McAuley that caused the forward to shoot just wide. In a rare Draperstown attack P. Flanagan cut in from the left wing and his right footed shot curled just wide. In the 22nd minute Dungiven beat the off side and centre forward Duddy was left 1 on 1 with the Draperstown keeper but Scullion made a good save with his feet to concede the corner.

This led to a flurry of goal mouth scrambles and several Dungiven corners including 1 cleared of the line by McAuley. It was now Draperstown’s turn to go on the attack and a lovely floated free from McGuigan was headed narrowly wide by O’Hara. The next attack Draperstown scored when a clever ball from Hegarty put through McKenna who made no mistake when he drilled the ball into the bottom corner. The second half began with Draperstown looking the brighter and good play from O’Hara set up P. Flanagan whose shot forced a corner.

A mix up in the Draperstown defence from a throw led to a Dungiven chance but English reacted well and cleared for a corner. From the corner Scullion missed the ball but O’Hara cleared the danger with a strong header. Defender then turned attacker when O’Hara broke out and his ball found McGuigan who set up P. Flanagan but his shot went harmlessly wide. A poor kick out from the Dungiven keeper fell to P. Flanagan and his first time shot was gathered by the keeper on the goal line. Dungiven were not finished and should have got an equaliser when, after good play on the left wing the centre forward had a free header but it went just wide. Draperstown finished the stronger and another excellent break from O’Hara found P. Flanagan whose tame shot was easily saved

Best on the day for Draperstown were Jack English, Mark McAuley and Stephen O’Hara

Coleraine U14s 1-9 DC Youth

November 30, 2009

North West & Coleraine Youth League

The Draperstown Youth push for the title is back on track following a comprehensive defeat of Coleraine under 14’s on a freezing Saturday morning at Coleraine.
Draperstown started the brighter and on 5 minutes a shot from centre–half McCabe hit the post and rebounded out to McGuigan who struck the ball from a tight angle about 15 yards out to make it 1-0.

The freezing cold had an effect on both sets of players and for the next 15 minutes it was a scrappy game with neither side creating a worthwhile chance. However on 20 minutes a goal mouth scramble resulted in a rushed Coleraine clearance – the ball fell kindly to McCabe who hit a lovely shot from 20 yards to make it 2-0. To their credit the young Coleraine team responded well and went straight onto the attack. The Coleraine right winger beat the full back and put in a great cross but the forward’s shot was tame and Scullion gathered. Coleraine continued to attack and a poor back pass put Scullion under pressure and his rushed clearance went out for a throw. That proved to be the last chance of the half for Coleraine and on 30 minutes Draperstown got their third when a great run from P. Flanagan was spotted by C. McAuley and his pass gave Flanagan a chance for the shot which the keeper got his finger tips to but could not keep out.

Draperstown continued to attack and should possibly have had 2 more goals in quick succession. In the 35th minute O’Hara collected the ball from the kick out, side stepped 3 tackles and hit an unstoppable shot from fully 30 yards to make it 4-0. Just before the half time whistle P. Flanagan collected the ball inside his own half and surged up the left wing beating 3 players and whipped in a great cross but the Draperstown forwards were not able to finish.

Coleraine came out brightly in the second half and in the first minute the winger sent in a good cross which was met by the centre – forward but his goal ward shot was brilliantly blocked by McCabe. Coleraine continued to press and a poor Draperstown clearance meant the ball fell to the Coleraine centre forward who was bundled over and the referee pointed to the spot. The penalty was converted in off the post to make it 4-1. That was the last worthwhile Coleraine attack of the game as the Draperstown defence of M. McAuley, McCabe, O’Hara and English comfortably kept the Coleraine attack at bay.

Draperstown then went on a scoring spree with T.Flanagan getting 2 goals in 2 minutes. The first one as a result of great play on the right from McDevitt and the second a header after a good cross from C.McAuley. In the 16th minute of the second half Draperstown got their 7th goal when McGuigan beat the off side trap after a clever ball from McCabe and he slotted the ball past the keeper. Two minutes later McGuigan turned provider when good play between him and O’Hara set up McCabe for his second and Draperstown’s eight. Draperstown were hungry for another goal and Greenwood, after some clever footwork, was unlucky not to score when his goal bound shot was deflected over for a corner. The last goal of the game came when McKenna collected the ball in midfield, burst through a couple of tackles and rifled home from 10 yards to finish the game 9-1.

Best on the day for Draperstown were McGuigan, McCabe and man of the match P. Flanagan

Institute 1-0 DC Youth

November 26, 2009

North West & Coleraine Youth League

The Draperstown Youth push for the title took a slight dent with a narrow 1-0 defeat to Institute on Saturday morning in Derry. Draperstown were without 6 regulars due to injury or other commitments; however the players who came into the squad did not let themselves down and were unlucky not to secure a point for their efforts.
From the kick-off Draperstown were under pressure and could have been 3 down within the first ten minutes with poor Institute finishing being Draperstown’s saviour.

Draperstown slowly came into the game and on 15 minutes a long clearance from McAuley caused confusion among the Institute defence and under pressure from Lagan the centre half conceded a corner. Draperstown took the short corner and a cross from T. Flanagan found McKenna whose shot went just wide. Draperstown kept the pressure up and a few minutes later a shot from P.Flanagan was half cleared and the looping ball almost fell to Doyle but just spun out for a corner. McDevitt whipped in a great corner and McCabe’s glancing header bounced off the crossbar. In response Institute went straight on the attack and a long ball caught stand in keeper R. McGuigan in two minds.

However he recovered well, made a good stop and full back O.McGuigan cleared the loose ball for a corner. From this corner the Institute centre forward had a free header but he headed over when he should have scored. The first half finished with Institute on top when a great shot from the right winger was well saved by R.McGuigan and English.

The second half began the way of the first – Draperstown slow out of the blocks and they were almost made to pay in the 2nd minute but a good recovery by English broke up the danger. The next 10 minutes were a scrappy affair with neither side creating any decent chances. On 16 minutes Institute won a corner and confusion in the Draperstown area gave the chance to the Institute forward who finished well. This seemed to deflate the Draperstown team for a short period and Institute could have gone further ahead when the forward was left 1 on 1 with McGuigan who did just enough to put him off and make him shoot wide.

To their credit Draperstown did fight back and piled on the pressure but could not get the breakthrough. With Draperstown pushing for an equaliser they were open to the counter attack and with 5 minutes left only great tracking back from P.Flanagan prevented a great scoring chance for Institute. Draperstown continued to press but Institute managed to hold out for the win.

Draperstown Youth 7-1 Donemana

November 2, 2009

North West & Coleraine Youth League

Draperstown youth continued their excellent run of form with a comprehensive 7-1 defeat of Donemana. This win lifts Draperstown to
the top of the Under 15 group of the NWCDYL.

Draperstown dominated the game from the start and had three shots on the Donemana goal within a matter of minutes. In the fifth minute a through ball from R. McGuigan was calmly slotted home by C. Convery. Draperstown continued to exert pressure and should possibly have added to their tally with shots from P.Flanagan and Convery going just over and wide.

The second goal was not far away and on sixteen minutes a good passage of play between McGuigan and Convery gave McGuigan a shooting chance but his shot was saved – the rebound fell kindly to Convery who scored his second of the game. Donemana tried to get into the game but Conor McKenna in midfield for Draperstown was excellent, winning every challenge.

Donemana did put Draperstown under a bit of pressure and won themselves a corner but this was well claimed by Scullion. The next Draperstown attack saw McKenna put through by T.Flanagan and his first time shot was well saved by the Donemana keeper. The next attack saw a long ball from S. O’Hara spilled by the keeper, with the ball falling to Conor Convery who had a simple tap in for his hat-trick. Draperstown continued to attack and played some great passing football.

A great one-two between P.Flanagan and R.McGuigan saw Flanagan line up McKenna whose shot was just over. Just before half time McGuigan put through Convery and his shot was saved by the keeper but Cahir McCabe sliding in made it 4-0 to Draperstown.

The second half continued the way of the first with Draperstown in control and the Donemana keeper did well to push away a shot from McGuigan. Just 5 minutes into the second half the Donemana cause was not helped when they had a player sent off for a petulant kick at McBride. The referee had no option but to issue a straight red card.

This gave Draperstown even more initiative and they peppered the Donemana goal with shots including a magnificent volley from P.Flanagan which clipped the bar and went over. The very next attack Draperstown scored again when a great pass from sub Danny Doyle was collected by Convery who finished with a lovely chip over the keeper.

To their credit Donemana did not give up and their persistence was rewarded when a mix up between the Draperstown defence left the Donemana winger 1 on 1 and he finished well to make it 5-1. After that it was business as usual with Draperstown well in control and following a goal mouth scramble McKenna’s goal bound shot was made sure by A. Lagan. Donemana’s last chance of the game came when their winger was once again left 1 on 1 with Scullion but this time the keeper made a great stop. There was time for another Draperstown goal and a well hit shot from C. McDevitt made it 7-1 for the home team.

Best on the day for Draperstown were Conor Convery and Conor McKenna.

The Season So Far……

October 28, 2009

With a third of the season gone Draperstown Youth are finally turning the potential and style shown last year into results and points. With the experience of last year under their belts and with the addition of a few new signings bringing height and strength to the team, the Under 15’s are showing that they are one of the form teams this season.

Match 1: Draperstown Youth Vs Institute (3-1)

The season got off to a perfect start with a superb 3-1 win against Institute who last year were runners up in the league.
Team: F. Averill, M. McAuley, S. O’Hara, C. McCabe, J. McAuley, C.McKenna, O.Hegarty, A. Lagan, P. Flanagan, R. McGuigan, C. Convery
Scorers: T. Flanagan (sub), Convery, Hegarty

Match 2: Moyola Vs Draperstown (3-2)

The first away game saw the only defeat of the season so far. Draperstown will have felt that they were desperately unlucky not to have at least got a point from this game – the referee disallowing a perfectly good equaliser for an alleged foul on the Moyola goalkeeper.
Team: F. Averill, M. McAuley, S. O’Hara, C. McCabe, J. McAuley, C.McKenna, O.Hegarty, A. Lagan, P. Flanagan, R. McGuigan, C. Convery
Scorers: P. Flanagan, Convery,

Match 3: Coleraine Under 14’s Vs Draperstown Youth (0-5)

The withdrawal of quite a few regulars gave a chance to some of the squad players and they did not disappoint. On a very wet and windy day in Coleraine it was the Coleraine team who ended up getting blown away by a brilliant Draperstown performance. The highlights being a Tiernan Flanagan hat-trick, an exquisite lob from Aidan Lagan and a clean sheet from stand in keeper Ryan McGuigan.
Team: R. McGuigan, S. McBride, J. McAuley, C. McCabe (Capt.) D. Doyle, C. McDevitt, C. McKenna, Z. Elaliou, P. Flanagan, T. Flanagan, A. Lagan
Scorers: T. Flanagan (hat-trick), P. Flanagan, A. Lagan

Match 4: Draperstown Youth Vs Coleraine Academy (2-2)

Coleraine came to Cahore as league leaders and looking revenge for the previous weeks defeat of their under 14’s. In a very tight game, which Draperstown played the better football, honours were shared. The goals were both fine long range efforts – a first time shot from 25 yards by Danny Doyle and a free kick from all of 35 yards by Stephen O’Hara.
Team: R. McGuigan, S. McBride, J. McAuley, C. McCabe (Capt.), S. O’Hara, C. McDevitt, C. McKenna, D. Doyle , P. Flanagan, T. Flanagan, A. Lagan
Scorers: D. Doyle, S. O’Hara

Match 5: Draperstown Youth Vs Dungiven (2-1)

A local derby against a team that beat Draperstown 3 times last year. The game was a debut for new goalkeeper Chris Scullion The first half was a scrappy affair but Draperstown upped their game in the second half, played the better football and were deserved winners.
Team: C. Scullion, S. McBride, J. McAuley, C. McCabe (Capt.), S. O’Hara, C. McDevitt, C. McKenna, D. Doyle , T. Flanagan, P. Flanagan, R. McGuigan
Scorers: S. O’Hara, R. McGuigan (pen.)

Match 6: Donemana Under 14’s Vs Draperstown Youth (2-4)

The final game of the first round of matches was an away game to Donemana. Due to improvement work being carried out on the Donemana pitch the game was switched to Strabane. Between the atrocious weather, a terrible pitch and a very big physical home team it took the Draperstown boy’s time to settle into their usual passing football. The first goal came on 15 minutes when a speculative long range shot from Piaras Flanagan was spilled by the keeper and the ball trickled into the back of the net. The second goal quickly followed when Tiernan Flanagan was allowed to stroke the ball home after a goal mouth scramble. Draperstown were now firmly in control and in the 25th minute a great through ball set T. Flanagan on his way. The centre half tripped him from behind and the referee pointed to the spot.

Ryan McGuigan stepped up and hit an unstoppable penalty into the keepers top right hand corner. Draperstown were firmly in control and the only moment of real danger came when the Draperstown keeper picked up a back pass and an indirect free kick was awarded just inside the box. Draperstown saw out the rest of the half without incident.

The second half began the way the first ended – with Draperstown firmly in control, The pressure told and in the 2nd minute of the second half Piaras scored his second of the game to make it 4-0. The game should have been over at this stage but whether Draperstown thought they had it won or the substitutions disrupted the flow, the home team started to take the initiative and their efforts were rewarded with 2 goals in quick succession. In the end Draperstown had won the match by half time and it was just as well they had done so as they let the home team have far too much of the ball in the second half.

Team: C. Scullion, S. McBride, O. McGuigan, C. McCabe (Capt.), S. O’Hara, C. McDevitt, C. McKenna, D. Doyle , P. Flanagan, T. Flanagan, R. McGuigan
Scorers: P. Flanagan (2), T. Flanagan, R. McGuigan

A big thank you to Eugene and Aidan McAuley of the Diamond Service Station who this year sponsored waterproof training tops for the squad. This is very much appreciated by all at the club.

Also a big thanks to the Draperstown “Ultras” supporters who have travelled to all the games so far including a 90 minute journey to a wet and windy Strabane. Thanks for all your support and we hope it continues throughout the season.
