Seagoe 2-7 Draperstown Celtic U14′s
This first round MUYL KO Cup match took on extra significance when it was made into a double header – position in the next round and 3 points were the prizes for the winner.
In a tight first 5 minutes honours were even and Seagoe played some nice football and even tested the Draperstown goal but McCrory was equal to the task with a brave save at the feet of the Seagoe forward .That seemed to wake the young Celts up and they took the lead within a minute when a great cross from the right by Scullion was headed home by Glass to make it 1 – 0.
A few minutes later it was 2- 0 when a long clearance was flicked on by Flanagan and Glass made a great run onto it and gave the keeper absolutely no chance with a classy finish. For the next 15 minutes Celtic were dominant but they could not get another goal even having a Flanagan goal ruled out for hand ball. The continued pressure resulted in a corner and the presence of the Draperstown “big men” caused panic in the area – the ball fell to McCloskey who finished bravely to make it 3 – 0. The next goal was not long in arriving when Flanagan and Glass combined again to give Glass his hat trick.
The young Celts were rampant now and goal number 5 arrived following great play down the left from the hard working and impressive Doole, his inch perfect ball was met on the half volley by Lagan and his shot with the outside of his boot flew into the top corner off the underside of the bar. Half time score 5-0.
The second half began well for the Celts and they again put the Seagoe defence under pressure without scoring. However 10 mins into the half Flanagan and Glass combined again with Flanagan whipping over a great cross and Glass scoring his fourth and best goal with a stunning volley into the top corner. At this stage the game was over but to their credit Seagoe kept battling and playing good football and they got a deserved goal when slack Draperstown play left a big gap in the defence and McCrory had no chance with the shot.
The next attack saw Draperstown make amends as playmaker Scullion continued his run of great form with a top class curling shot into the corner to restore the six goal cushion. Seagoe did come back into it again but they were never going to be a real danger and in the end they got another consolation goal to finish the game 7 – 2.
