St Mary’s vs. Celtic U14’s – Match postponed due to waterlogged pitch

Celtic U16 2-0 Donemana

Celtic U16s continued their current good run of form with a hard fought victory over a decent Donemana side at a freezing Cahore Park on Saturday. Credit must be given to Donemana for bouncing back after a mauling last week and making the Celts work for their 3 points. Draperstown made use of the wind and attacked from the off but they did not put Donemana under any real pressure. The Celts continued to try to play good football but Donemana got everyone behind the ball and closed down really well.

Celtic began to influence the game more and the wingers, Mulholland and Flanagan were a handful for the Donemana full backs. The breakthrough came when McKenna, showing good skill, dribbled his way into the box before being scythed down – McGuigan stepped up and drilled the ball down the middle to make it 1-0. Donemana tried to come back into the game but found the defence of McCabe, Young and the McAuley’s hard to break down. The Celts did have a nervous moment when a long clearance from the Donemana defence caught the Celts napping and a rash challenge from keeper McCloy took out the Donemana centre-forward. The referee gave the keeper the benefit of the doubt and awarded a free kick from just outside the box, which Draperstown dealt with well.

The second half began well for Donemana and they took the game to Celtic and had a couple of half chances which they failed to capitalise on. At this stage of the game it seemed only a matter of time to the Donemana equaliser but McCloy redeemed himself when he dived full length to grasp a cross with the Donemana right winger waiting to tap the ball home.

Draperstown rode out the storm and took a tighter grip of the game when the lively Tallon scored to make it 2-0. To their credit the visitors did not give up and continued to make the Celts work until the very end of the game.
All in all a difficult game for the Celts but they persevered and deserved the victory – another difficult game awaits them next week when they visit Moyola.
