North West & Coleraine Youth League
Draperstown youth continued their excellent run of form with a comprehensive 7-1 defeat of Donemana. This win lifts Draperstown to
the top of the Under 15 group of the NWCDYL.
Draperstown dominated the game from the start and had three shots on the Donemana goal within a matter of minutes. In the fifth minute a through ball from R. McGuigan was calmly slotted home by C. Convery. Draperstown continued to exert pressure and should possibly have added to their tally with shots from P.Flanagan and Convery going just over and wide.
The second goal was not far away and on sixteen minutes a good passage of play between McGuigan and Convery gave McGuigan a shooting chance but his shot was saved – the rebound fell kindly to Convery who scored his second of the game. Donemana tried to get into the game but Conor McKenna in midfield for Draperstown was excellent, winning every challenge.
Donemana did put Draperstown under a bit of pressure and won themselves a corner but this was well claimed by Scullion. The next Draperstown attack saw McKenna put through by T.Flanagan and his first time shot was well saved by the Donemana keeper. The next attack saw a long ball from S. O’Hara spilled by the keeper, with the ball falling to Conor Convery who had a simple tap in for his hat-trick. Draperstown continued to attack and played some great passing football.
A great one-two between P.Flanagan and R.McGuigan saw Flanagan line up McKenna whose shot was just over. Just before half time McGuigan put through Convery and his shot was saved by the keeper but Cahir McCabe sliding in made it 4-0 to Draperstown.
The second half continued the way of the first with Draperstown in control and the Donemana keeper did well to push away a shot from McGuigan. Just 5 minutes into the second half the Donemana cause was not helped when they had a player sent off for a petulant kick at McBride. The referee had no option but to issue a straight red card.
This gave Draperstown even more initiative and they peppered the Donemana goal with shots including a magnificent volley from P.Flanagan which clipped the bar and went over. The very next attack Draperstown scored again when a great pass from sub Danny Doyle was collected by Convery who finished with a lovely chip over the keeper.
To their credit Donemana did not give up and their persistence was rewarded when a mix up between the Draperstown defence left the Donemana winger 1 on 1 and he finished well to make it 5-1. After that it was business as usual with Draperstown well in control and following a goal mouth scramble McKenna’s goal bound shot was made sure by A. Lagan. Donemana’s last chance of the game came when their winger was once again left 1 on 1 with Scullion but this time the keeper made a great stop. There was time for another Draperstown goal and a well hit shot from C. McDevitt made it 7-1 for the home team.
Best on the day for Draperstown were Conor Convery and Conor McKenna.
