Coleraine U14s 1-9 DC Youth
November 30, 2009
North West & Coleraine Youth League
The Draperstown Youth push for the title is back on track following a comprehensive defeat of Coleraine under 14’s on a freezing Saturday morning at Coleraine.
Draperstown started the brighter and on 5 minutes a shot from centre–half McCabe hit the post and rebounded out to McGuigan who struck the ball from a tight angle about 15 yards out to make it 1-0.
The freezing cold had an effect on both sets of players and for the next 15 minutes it was a scrappy game with neither side creating a worthwhile chance. However on 20 minutes a goal mouth scramble resulted in a rushed Coleraine clearance – the ball fell kindly to McCabe who hit a lovely shot from 20 yards to make it 2-0. To their credit the young Coleraine team responded well and went straight onto the attack. The Coleraine right winger beat the full back and put in a great cross but the forward’s shot was tame and Scullion gathered. Coleraine continued to attack and a poor back pass put Scullion under pressure and his rushed clearance went out for a throw. That proved to be the last chance of the half for Coleraine and on 30 minutes Draperstown got their third when a great run from P. Flanagan was spotted by C. McAuley and his pass gave Flanagan a chance for the shot which the keeper got his finger tips to but could not keep out.
Draperstown continued to attack and should possibly have had 2 more goals in quick succession. In the 35th minute O’Hara collected the ball from the kick out, side stepped 3 tackles and hit an unstoppable shot from fully 30 yards to make it 4-0. Just before the half time whistle P. Flanagan collected the ball inside his own half and surged up the left wing beating 3 players and whipped in a great cross but the Draperstown forwards were not able to finish.
Coleraine came out brightly in the second half and in the first minute the winger sent in a good cross which was met by the centre – forward but his goal ward shot was brilliantly blocked by McCabe. Coleraine continued to press and a poor Draperstown clearance meant the ball fell to the Coleraine centre forward who was bundled over and the referee pointed to the spot. The penalty was converted in off the post to make it 4-1. That was the last worthwhile Coleraine attack of the game as the Draperstown defence of M. McAuley, McCabe, O’Hara and English comfortably kept the Coleraine attack at bay.
Draperstown then went on a scoring spree with T.Flanagan getting 2 goals in 2 minutes. The first one as a result of great play on the right from McDevitt and the second a header after a good cross from C.McAuley. In the 16th minute of the second half Draperstown got their 7th goal when McGuigan beat the off side trap after a clever ball from McCabe and he slotted the ball past the keeper. Two minutes later McGuigan turned provider when good play between him and O’Hara set up McCabe for his second and Draperstown’s eight. Draperstown were hungry for another goal and Greenwood, after some clever footwork, was unlucky not to score when his goal bound shot was deflected over for a corner. The last goal of the game came when McKenna collected the ball in midfield, burst through a couple of tackles and rifled home from 10 yards to finish the game 9-1.
Best on the day for Draperstown were McGuigan, McCabe and man of the match P. Flanagan

Institute 1-0 DC Youth
November 26, 2009
North West & Coleraine Youth League
The Draperstown Youth push for the title took a slight dent with a narrow 1-0 defeat to Institute on Saturday morning in Derry. Draperstown were without 6 regulars due to injury or other commitments; however the players who came into the squad did not let themselves down and were unlucky not to secure a point for their efforts.
From the kick-off Draperstown were under pressure and could have been 3 down within the first ten minutes with poor Institute finishing being Draperstown’s saviour.
Draperstown slowly came into the game and on 15 minutes a long clearance from McAuley caused confusion among the Institute defence and under pressure from Lagan the centre half conceded a corner. Draperstown took the short corner and a cross from T. Flanagan found McKenna whose shot went just wide. Draperstown kept the pressure up and a few minutes later a shot from P.Flanagan was half cleared and the looping ball almost fell to Doyle but just spun out for a corner. McDevitt whipped in a great corner and McCabe’s glancing header bounced off the crossbar. In response Institute went straight on the attack and a long ball caught stand in keeper R. McGuigan in two minds.
However he recovered well, made a good stop and full back O.McGuigan cleared the loose ball for a corner. From this corner the Institute centre forward had a free header but he headed over when he should have scored. The first half finished with Institute on top when a great shot from the right winger was well saved by R.McGuigan and English.
The second half began the way of the first – Draperstown slow out of the blocks and they were almost made to pay in the 2nd minute but a good recovery by English broke up the danger. The next 10 minutes were a scrappy affair with neither side creating any decent chances. On 16 minutes Institute won a corner and confusion in the Draperstown area gave the chance to the Institute forward who finished well. This seemed to deflate the Draperstown team for a short period and Institute could have gone further ahead when the forward was left 1 on 1 with McGuigan who did just enough to put him off and make him shoot wide.
To their credit Draperstown did fight back and piled on the pressure but could not get the breakthrough. With Draperstown pushing for an equaliser they were open to the counter attack and with 5 minutes left only great tracking back from P.Flanagan prevented a great scoring chance for Institute. Draperstown continued to press but Institute managed to hold out for the win.

Draperstown Celtic 2-1 Raceview
November 2, 2009
Irish Cup. Round 2
Two quick-fire goals from Eamon Murray and a penalty save from John Paul McConnell were the main ingredients for this second round victory over a good Raceview side from the Ballymena Intermediate league. The visitors, who are sitting near the top of their league showed that they were a good attacking side and enjoyed a lot of possession but their inability to take clear scoring chances proved to be a part in their downfall.
Postponed from last week, heavy rain in the hour before the kick off left the pitch in a soft condition but it did not seem to bother Draperstown as they raced into a two goal lead inside the first ten minutes. They took the lead on nine minutes when Crossett found Higgins who crossed for Murray to head home. Barley a minute later it was Sean McBride who powered down the left to cross to the unmarked Murray who slotted the ball past Kerr. This opening salvo rocked Raceview and their first response was a volley from Mott on 19 minutes which flashed over the bar.
The visitors did put some urgency into their play and should have pulled a goal back on 25 minutes when a free fell to David Tennant but he hit wide from close range. Tennant, who has been scoring regularly of late for Raceview, had a quiet game overall and was well marshalled by McKillion throughout.
The last ten minutes of the half saw Matthew Boyd become very influential. Firstly his good run past three Celtic tackles eventually ended in a foul ion the edge of the box which was well cleared by the Celtic defence. In the 42nd minute he headed over from McBurney’s corner and right on half time McConnell had to save well from Boyd’s smart shot from the edge of the box.
The second half was only two minutes old when Raceview got back into the game and again Boyd was the instigator. His surging run found McBurney on the left and his rising shot left McConnell with little chance. Four minutes later Murray almost claimed his third for Draperstown when his deft header from Bradley’s free left Kerr scrambling across his goal but the ball went the wrong side of the post. As the half wore on the visitors were now the dominant force with Celtic relying on quick breaks to relieve the pressure. Raceview had an excellent chance to draw level on 62 minutes when McKillion gave away a penalty but McConnell dived to his left to palm away McBurney’s effort and the rebound was flashed badly wide.
With the introduction of Brendan Heron and Emmet McKillion for Celtic, the home side did finish strongly. Kerr saved well from McKillion while Heron, as ever, looked very lively. However, any chance of Raceview getting back into the game were extinguished in the 85th minute when Forsythe was red carded for a foul on McKillion, the referee having adjudged that he was the last defender, which appeared a little harsh as there did appear to be cover. Celtic easily saw out the remaining minutes and secured passage to the third round of the cup. A solid if unspectacular performance from Draperstown but a good win nonetheless and one which manager John McKee will hope to build on in the coming weeks.
Draperstown Youth 7-1 Donemana
November 2, 2009
North West & Coleraine Youth League
Draperstown youth continued their excellent run of form with a comprehensive 7-1 defeat of Donemana. This win lifts Draperstown to
the top of the Under 15 group of the NWCDYL.
Draperstown dominated the game from the start and had three shots on the Donemana goal within a matter of minutes. In the fifth minute a through ball from R. McGuigan was calmly slotted home by C. Convery. Draperstown continued to exert pressure and should possibly have added to their tally with shots from P.Flanagan and Convery going just over and wide.
The second goal was not far away and on sixteen minutes a good passage of play between McGuigan and Convery gave McGuigan a shooting chance but his shot was saved – the rebound fell kindly to Convery who scored his second of the game. Donemana tried to get into the game but Conor McKenna in midfield for Draperstown was excellent, winning every challenge.
Donemana did put Draperstown under a bit of pressure and won themselves a corner but this was well claimed by Scullion. The next Draperstown attack saw McKenna put through by T.Flanagan and his first time shot was well saved by the Donemana keeper. The next attack saw a long ball from S. O’Hara spilled by the keeper, with the ball falling to Conor Convery who had a simple tap in for his hat-trick. Draperstown continued to attack and played some great passing football.
A great one-two between P.Flanagan and R.McGuigan saw Flanagan line up McKenna whose shot was just over. Just before half time McGuigan put through Convery and his shot was saved by the keeper but Cahir McCabe sliding in made it 4-0 to Draperstown.
The second half continued the way of the first with Draperstown in control and the Donemana keeper did well to push away a shot from McGuigan. Just 5 minutes into the second half the Donemana cause was not helped when they had a player sent off for a petulant kick at McBride. The referee had no option but to issue a straight red card.
This gave Draperstown even more initiative and they peppered the Donemana goal with shots including a magnificent volley from P.Flanagan which clipped the bar and went over. The very next attack Draperstown scored again when a great pass from sub Danny Doyle was collected by Convery who finished with a lovely chip over the keeper.
To their credit Donemana did not give up and their persistence was rewarded when a mix up between the Draperstown defence left the Donemana winger 1 on 1 and he finished well to make it 5-1. After that it was business as usual with Draperstown well in control and following a goal mouth scramble McKenna’s goal bound shot was made sure by A. Lagan. Donemana’s last chance of the game came when their winger was once again left 1 on 1 with Scullion but this time the keeper made a great stop. There was time for another Draperstown goal and a well hit shot from C. McDevitt made it 7-1 for the home team.
Best on the day for Draperstown were Conor Convery and Conor McKenna.

DC Res 1-2 BBOB
November 2, 2009
North West Premier Division
The bad run for Draperstown’s reserves continued. With heavy defeats in their last two league encounters, there was at least a much better performance this time around for Draperstown.
The side Draperstown faced had previously won the reverse fixture by the same margin they did this time. A well contested match was marred with a flurry of cards handed out from the referee. The first incident of the game came after approximately 20 seconds. A late challenge by the BBOB winger on the returning Murchan surely should have resulted in at least a yellow card. However, going unpunished set the precedent for the game where a number of challenges didn’t receive the required punishment. This again eventually led to frustration for both sets of players.
The first twenty minutes saw both sides playing decent football without managing to test either keeper. This however ended after twenty five minutes when a slack goal was concededs by the home side. Coming down the left side, BBOB played a neat one-two resulting in a good finish just inside the box past the unlucky McGuigan in nets. Draperstown will be unhappy with the manner of the goal with the goalscorer not being tracked back by the Draperstown midfielder.
Feeling aggrieved that they had conceded a sloppy goal, the home side pressed for an equaliser. A tactical switch by McKee saw Murchan and Kelly exchange roles down the right hand side. This paid almost instant dividends with Murchan doing good work down the right, near the penalty area, holding off the opposition defender, allowing the midfield to break in support. He eventually released the ball to the oncoming Murray, who was felled rashly by the centre half inside the penalty area.
The resulting penalty was coolly dispatched by Martin McGuigan, sending the ball to the opposite corner to the goalkeepers dive. Following the equaliser, there was only one side in it for the final ten minutes of the opening half. Heavy pressure from all angles couldn’t be converted into a goal. Despite this, Draperstown could ultimately be pleased with their first half performance.
Unfortunately, the first half began in the same vein as the first, with both teams meandering, finding their feet for the first fifteen minutes. Coming from a Draperstown free kick deep inside their own half, possession was lost easily. A large gap in the centre of their defence was exposed all too easily by the BBOB right midfielder who dispatched the chance well past the again hapless McGuigan.
Back to square one, Draperstown again battled to find the equaliser. It was all one way traffic, but in the same all as the conclusion of the first half, none could be found. A number of chances were created which Draperstown will be disappointed they couldn’t convert. Late on, midfielder Kelly, frustrated at being seemingly clearly fouled, but receiving no free from the referee, petulantly swiped out at the opposition. This resulted in a red card, and summed up a disappointing end result. Draperstown need to start picking up points very quickly, or risk being embroiled in a difficult struggle at the wrong end of the table.
