DC 0-3 Tobermore Utd

October 20, 2008

There may be only 4 miles separating these teams in terms of their geographical location but they were much further apart in terms of their football ability based on this Craig Cup Quarter Final.

Tobermore were dominant in all aspects of the game and while Draperstown did have their fair share of possession they were not able to turn this into clear goal scoring chances. The home side worked hard and chased and harried for the 90 minutes but were lacking the touch of skill needed to unlock a resolute and well organised defence.

Tobermore’s last visit to the Cahore Road saw them going out of the Intermediate Cup at the hands of Draperstown and they were determined not to be on the end of a similar result. While Draperstown opened brightly enough it was Tobermore who took a somewhat fortunate lead on five minutes when McNicholl allowed Cooke’s speculative shot squirm from his grasp and give the visitors the lead on five minutes.

This put Celtic on the back foot and Tobermore were looking quite dangerous on the attack though McNicholl redeemed himself somewhat with some clean handling and timely interventions.

The second goal was always going to be important and it went to Tobermore on 40 minutes when McIntyre stole in at the far post to turn in Doherty’s inviting cross.

Draperstown responded well in the second half and certainly took the game to Tobermore but without carrying a real goal threat. Sean McBride brought a good save from Hassan who in truth had a quiet game all afternoon in the Tobermore goal but it was the visitor’s who put the game beyond Celtic’s reach with a third on 80 minutes and with it book a deserved place in the semi final of the competition.

UUC 1-0 Draperstown Celtic

October 13, 2008

A goal inside the first minute by James Gardiner was enough to give UUC all three points in this league clash at Coleraine and condemn reigning champions Draperstown to their second defeat of the new campaign. Overall Celtic deserved at least a point as they had a great deal of possession and UUC had their keeper to thank in keeping the visitors at bay on more than one occasion.

The only goal of the game was a poor one from Draperstown’s point of view. Ally Gordon was allowed to evade three tackles on the left wing before crossing to the inrushing Gardiner who scored from close range. The students could have doubled their tally on 6 minutes only for a brilliant save from Eoin McNicholl, making his first return from a lengthy injury lay off. But after the first ten minutes Draperstown came more into the game and began to take control of the possession. Gavin Bradley’s excellent volley was well saved by McGeough on 11 minutes and a period of intense pressure by Draperstown again saw the keeper somehow keep out Bradley’s shot on 28 minutes.

The university side was always a threat from set pieces but Celtic managed to nullify this aspect of the home side’s game with some dogged defending especially from Quinn and McKillion.

The second half saw little of a threat from the home side who appeared to be quite happy playing on the break. Indeed McNicholl in Draperstown’s goal  did not have to make any save of note in the half.
Despite the possession which Draperstown enjoyed, they did not put McGeough in the home goals under enough pressure while Handford and O’Doherty coped well with any high ball pumped into the UUC defensive area.

Half chances were created by Draperstown, notably to Gavin Bradley who shot just wide on 50 minutes, and also to Sean McBride whose shot was saved by McGough. UUC were defending in numbers as the game entered the final minutes and they almost paid for their lack of possession when in a frantic final two minutes both Gavin and Seamus Bradley had decent opportunities to level the game and McBride headed over from a corner. But it was not to be and the home side held on for a valuable home win.
