Celtic Host Chernobyl Children
July 10, 2008
On a warm and sunny Saturday 26th July 2008, Draperstown Celtic Mini Soccer Scheme welcomed 15 children from Belarus, along with their host families from the Ballymena Group of the Chernobyl Children Appeal (CCA), to Cahore Road for a couple of hours of football fun and games.
It was about 3 months ago that a discussion between Draperstown Celtics’ Mini Soccer Co-ordinator Paul Mc Callion and Johanne Mc Kendry of the Ballymena Group of Chernobyl Children’s Charity started this process. In no time at all the Ballymena branch of the CCA and Draperstown Celtic agreed that the children visit the Celtic Mini Soccer Scheme.
On the day around 70 children took part in fun and enjoyable football related activities that developed the skills of all taking part. Indeed it was muted that Draperstown Celtic would offer to fly some of the children back on a weekly basis so that they could line out for the Celts.
After the football frolics had been completed the Draperstown Celtic Chairman, Michael Kelly, made a presentation to the Chernobyl children and their host families to remind them of their visit to the soccer scheme. In his presentation, Michael stated that the day was very enjoyable and that he hoped that this was the first year of an annual fixture between the groups, a comment that was very welcome to the Ballymena group who hailed the day as a “great success” and “very enjoyable”
Thanks to all involved in making the day a success including the coaches, the interpreter, and the staff of the Market Inn for their help during the presentation and most importantly the children.

Draperstown Funweek
July 7, 2008
Nutty Krust Time arrives again in South Derry!
The second year of the Nutty Krust IFA Soccer Fun week programme kicked off in style this week in Draperstown. A strong turnout from the budding footballers of Draperstown made sure that the first summer fun week was a success. And to make things even better, the weather held up too!!
The week entailed a mix of high quality coaching from UEFA B Licence coaches as well as many fun activities which challenged and developed the skills of the children. Also, Alan Snoddy, Refereeing Co-ordinator for the Irish FA dropped in to deliver a fun session on refereeing!
On the final day, Northern Ireland internationals and Umbro sponsored players Peter Thompson and Michael Gault dropped in to join in the fun. After they had joined in some of the matches and
answered a few questions they presented everyone with their umbro packs as well as the prize winners from throughout the week. The Umbro player of the week award was a difficult decision but all the coaches agreed that Cahir McEldowney was the deserving winner.
Summing up the week GDO Niall Curneen said “What a great week we have had at Cahore Road. Unlike last year, the weather was super and we got lots of playing time! The kids enjoyed the whole week – especially the inflatable pitch on the final day!! Thanks to my coaches Ruairi McClean and Reuben Smith for their help and also to Peter Thompson and Michael Gault for coming up on the final day. The whole week has been enjoyable from start to finish and already I’m looking forward to Magherafelt. Also, thanks to Nutty Krust for the goodie-bags that they provided for everyone.”
