Roe Valley 1-2 Draperstown Celtic

January 29, 2007

Draperstown emerged with all three points from their trip to Limavady, their first league win, in what has been a very restricted season and their overall play just about deserved the victory. They created the majority of the chances but a failure to turn these into goals could have seen the home side gain an unexpected point.

Played on a very heavy pitch Celtic appeared to adapt to the conditions much more quickly than their hosts and were a goal to the good after 12 minutes when a Bradley corner was cleared only to Chris McGarrigle who hammered the ball home from 20 yards past the flailing arms of Davies in the home goal.

Roe Valley caused a bit of panic among Celtic’s defence when Lee Ferris’ free kick was eventually scrambled away by Brown with Mullan ready to pounce. Ryan Bradley could have doubled Celtic’s lead when after a good break from midfield he fired over the bar from 18 yards under pressure from McPeake.
Roe Valley were having to defend in depth at this stage and Davies’ fumble from Caulfield’s free should have been capitalised by Celtic before the ball was cleared.

However the second goal came on 26 minutes when after a quickly taken free kick, Cathal Donnelly’s low cross eluded 3 Celtic forwards only for Roe Valley veteran Mickey Guy to turn the ball past Davies to put Draperstown comfortably in the driving seat.

They had chances to put the game firmly beyond Roe Valley’s grasp even at this early stage with two good chances in quick succession. Firstly on 39 minutes, Sean McBride who put in a very good performance, was unlucky to see his shot parried by Davies only for the ball to stick in the mud on the goal line allowing the keeper to recover. Two minutes later McBride crossed for Eamon Murray to shoot straight at Davies who gathered at the second attempt.  Roe Valley pulled themselves back into the game almost on half time when a poorly defended right wing cross fell to Matt Ferris who poked the ball past Leonard to leave the half time score at 2-1.

Celtic opened the second half in determined fashion. Ryan Bradley fired wide on 47 minutes and two minutes later McBrides shot was blocked by Davies, the rebound again falling to Bradley whose shot was deflected away fro a corner. Having survived these scares, Valley upped the pressure on the Celtic defence and largely took control of the remainder of the game. Doran was unlucky when a good run forced his way past three Celtic defenders before he shot into the side netting and just after the hour mark, Kevin Leonard pulled off a fine diving save from Cooke’s free kick. Draperstown were relying playing on the break at this stage and Raymond Caulfiled who had an excellent game in central midfield certainly led the charge on more than one occasion in an effort to secure a vital third goal, being stopped by a last gasp tackle by Moore to prevent him from doing so on 70 minutes.

The home side will wonder how they didn’t equalise on 73 minutes when in an almighty scramble following a corner both Cooke and Mc Peake had shots cleared off the line the latter of which fell to Lee Ferris who from one yard crashed the ball onto the crossbar which Celtic eventually cleared. This appeared to knock the fight out of the home side and it was Draperstown who could have added to their tally with both Murray and Ryan Bradley missing goal scoring chances before the final whistle came leaving Celtic just about deserving winners, especially on chances created.

Claudy Rovers 4-1 Draperstown Reserves

January 29, 2007

A patched up Draperstown Reserves lost away to table topping Claudy on Saturday. A late penalty was little consolation as the bad run continues. To be fair the team did their best on the day and the very young midfield played well.

Draperstown Celtic 0-2 Portstewart

January 7, 2007

Draperstown Celtic went down 2-0 to Carnegie First Division strugglers Portstewart in the Belfast Telegraph Intermediate Cup 3rd Round. Two first half goals from Whiteside and McAllister was the difference. The fact that they did not add to their tally was largely down to some poor finishing as both Woods and McAllister missed clear cut chances in the second half.

For their part, it was a day Draperstown will want to forget. It was their first game in over three weeks and it showed as they appeared very sluggish and produced very little in front of goal apart from Cathal Donnelly’s blistering volley which smashed off the cross bar when the home side were one down.

Portstewart had all the early pressure and John Higgins did well to block a goal bound effort from Moffett in the second minute but the influential mid fielder was on hand to set up centre half Whiteside in the 15th minute. The seasiders came close to extending the lead when Todd had a good shot well saved by Celtic’s Leonard and Moffett headed into the side netting when well placed. Cathal Donnelly who was one of Celtic’s players who had a good game was desperately unlucky with his volley on 37 minutes which would have brought the sides level but just before half time the visitors went two up when McKee’s wayward clearance fell to Woods who fed McAllister who scored with ease.

The second half became a rather ragged affair with Portstewart happy to defend their lead and break when they could. Celtic produced very little in the half to suggest they could break down the visitors defence and their cause was not helped when both Higgins and Ward were sent off for picking up two yellow cards near the end of the game. Portstewart should have extended their lead against a depleted home side who had now very little to offer but were content with the victory which sent them deservedly into round four.

Draperstown Reserves 0-2 Newtowne

January 7, 2007

{mosimage} Draperstown went down 2-0 to Premier division pace setters Newtowne on a cold but sunny Cahore Park on Saturday in the Matt Morrison North West Junior Cup. In all it was a good game, well refereed by Ian McCullouch and played in a sporting manner by both teams.

Newtowne laboured to a 2-0 win over Draperstown on a cold but sunny Cahore Rd Draperstown on Saturday. In all it was a good game, well refereed by McCullooch and played in a sporting manner by both teams. Draperstwon is easily one of the friendliest clubs to visit in the league.

A toothless Rory O’Reilly showed some bite after an early morning dental appointment to hit the bar early on. Draperstown threatened soon after through the impressive hardworking McKillion.

The game fell into a pattern at this juncture. Newtowne pushing forward and Draperstown holding firm. Morrison found Nradley hard to pass while Marty McGuigan and Kennedy were very good in the middle. Drapersdtown worked hard but the returning Mickey O’Brien was as solid as ever beside the ever solid Derek Wilson.

Just before half time Conor O’Hara saw a tremendous header rebound off the crossbar, Was it going to be one of those days.

When Loughery hit the post early in the second half it did seem like one of those days. However when Ryan Magee got his big noggin on to a Blain Morrison corner in the 62nd minute Newtowne took the lead.

It was well deserves as the team upped a gear in the second half. Morrison was a pest (what’s new) and a tattooed Marty Harkin was doing damage on the other flank.

An under the weather and strangely quiet Mickey Walsh was dominant in the middle during the second half. Newtowne went 2-0 in front when Blain Morrison scored with an excellent strike from the edge of the area. Mickey Burns missed a sitter minutes later to make it 3-0 but missed.

With time running out McCorry was thwarted by a fine Norris save to keep the score 2-0. The only other highlight was a clearance from a home defender which hit and dented my car. I have been assured by Benny McPeake that Laurence O’Kane and Austin McKillion will pay for the damage out of their own pockets!!

Overall the Newts will be happy with the result. The survived 90 minutes on a heavy pitch with a few players under par. For me it was a delight to see O’Brien back in the red shirt and he lifts Wilson who was a major player. In the middle Walsh worked hard while O’Reilly and Loughery played well from the off. Loughery was arguably Newtowne’s best player, intelligent and hard working from the start.
