Roe Rovers Res 1-0 Draperstown Reserves

Draperstown Reserves left Limavady empty handed after what was arguably their best performance of the season to date, if not for wasted chances and a element of misfortune then the result could certainly have been a lot different.

In the absence of skipper Phillip cooke James Haslett took the armband. just rewards for a player who has been superb so far this season. The South Derry men were it has to be said the better side, fitter, stronger and with more purpose. Rovers however under Lee Guy have been grinding out results even when not playing at their best. The first half was a tense and tight affair on the tiny pitch at Scroggy. Neither side had any great chances but a half chance gave Rovers the lead. On his first start for the club young Pearce McNicholl recently transfered from O’Connors swivelled in a packed area and found the bottom corner. This was the only move of any note but it was noticeable how many second ball Draperstown won and was a concern for Rovers at the break. Draperstown threw everything at Rovers in the second half but too often they threw it in the air. “The Chief” – big Mark Thompson, never lost a header all day as we have now come to expect of him. Rovers sometimes take him for granted. Not on Saturday. He was the reason three points went to Rovers when one would have been fair and none wouldnt have been unrealistic. Brendan McGonigle and McNicholl combined well for Rovers only other real chance of note but the former fired narrowly over. With only one real attempt at goal in each half Rovers were delighted with stealing all three points
