Keady Celtic 3-1 Draperstown Reserves
September 18, 2006
The reserves travelled to Keady Celtic for their Irish Junior cup game, and you guessed it, the referee didn’t show!!. However they did play a match against their opponents and lost 3-1. However there has to be a doubt if the result will stand, what with a non officially appointed ref and no match card. We wait to see what the I.F.A. in their wisdom decide to do for both games.
Draperstown Celtic 5-0 Roe Valley
September 10, 2006
This pharmacy supplies League Cup encounter at Cahore road on Saturday resulted in an emphatic win for the home side with all five goals coming in a pulsating second half. Celtic dominated the entire game with many fine individual performances all over the field and it was the manner in which several of the goals were scored which was the main talking point.
Draperstown opened brightly with Burns and Murray coming close before what seemed a clear cut penalty was not given when Murray was bundled off the ball by Clancey of Roe Valley. Good link up play by Celtic was much in evidence with Ward, Caulfield and Donnelly all creating problems for the hard working visitor’s defence.
Play then became rather scrappy for a period with the referee brandishing several yellow cards which disrupted Celtic’s earlier free flowing football. The home defence was able to deal very ably with what attacks Roe Valley were able to muster, indeed their first shot came on 40 minutes which was dragged wide from the edge of the box.
The second half began as did the first with Celtic in control. Their first goal came as a result of a corner on 54 minutes. Donnelly’s centre was met by Ryan Brown whose powerful header was only parried by goalkeeper Ewing and Eamon Murray lashed home form six yards. Their second came five minutes later with Cathal Donnelly again being the provider when, having beaten the full back, crossed for Eamon Burns to side foot home from close range. Roe Valley had little to offer at this stage and more Celtic goals looked likely and the next three were all finishes of the highest quality. Firstly Chris McGarrigle stormed through the static Roe Valley defence and curled a delightful ball past the despairing dive of Ewing to put Celtic three up after 68 minutes.
Substitute Sean Maguire got in on the act when he robbed Clancey 25 yards from goal and spotting Ewing off his line, lobbed the ball into net with a high degree of skill, typical of what this very bright prospect is capable of. The final goal again came from McGarrigle who waltzed past Davy King and lobbed the advancing keeper from the edge of the box to seal a wonderful goal scoring display from himself and also round off a very good team effort from Celtic, especially in the second half.
What will please manager Laurence O’Kane most will be the way in which his team took the chances which their good play created. Too many times over the last two seasons, it was Celtic’s inability to score when controlling games which has cost them dearly. Saturday’s performance perhaps showed that they are eventually beginning to put that part of their game right.

South Derry Grassroots Development Centre
September 4, 2006
The Irish Football Association established 16 Grassroots Development Centres throughout the province in the spring of this year. The purpose of these centres is to develop the sport of Association Football at grassroots level across Northern Ireland.
One of the centres is to be based in the South Derry area and as a result, Draperstown Celtic FC , Magherafelt Sky Blues FC and Moyola Park FC have joined forces to ensure that the young people of South Derry would not lose the many benefits which the Grassroots Centre could bring to the area. Following discussions with Trevor Erskine, one of the IFA’s Grassroots Development Officers, the three clubs have agreed to join together in forming the South Derry Grassroots Development Centre.
By the end of September the IFA will have appointed a Grassroots Development Officer to replace Philip Melville who has transferred to Castlereagh Grassroots Development Centre and the young people of the area will be in a position to benefit from his/her input in a number of different ways.
